TOPIC: Monitoring
#6668
Re:Monitoring 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hey to everyone on the boards. I am very new.

I found this topic becouse this is the solution that I would currently need the most.

I need to monitor my network usage by IP. I have trouble managing network (and users ) without knowing who is the one who is creating excesive amount of traffic.

Well the problem in it's root (pun intended) boils down to my lack of knowladge and experiance with linux based OS.

What I am trying to say is that even with the explenation of installation procedures found here in this thread I still don't know how to instal this module (ntop, app-jnnetop).

I get the following message in putty:

[root@gateway ~]# yum install ntop
Loading "protect-packages" plugin
Loading "kmod" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
No package ntop available.
Nothing to do

or

[root@gateway ~]# yum --enablerepo=extras install app-jnettop
Loading "protect-packages" plugin
Loading "kmod" plugin

Error getting repository data for extras, repository not found

As you see I have no idea what to do next... How do I install this module?

Perhapes someone would point me to some literature I could get that would be good for a newbie in linux and/or ClearOS.

Thanks
Mitja

Hi Mitja, your nearly there!
Code:

yum --enablerepo=base-extras install ntop

NTOP will install and configure it self to run on port 3000, so you can then point your web browser to clearosIP:3000

Great! Wasn't expecting souch a quick reply.

Install was successful now.

But I cannot connect to it on the port 3000. Must I start the service? Or is there something else I have to set?

How about jnettop that Ben is recomending? Can you help me configure this one also? I would rather have this monitor inside ClearOS web GUI.

Thanks for your help.

Ok I've not used this in a while so reinstalled it

First you need to just type 'ntop' from the command line, it will run in the terminal and prompt for an admin password. This is required before the service will work correctly

After you have entered this twice it will run, but Press Ctrl+C to quit.

Then you will be able to start the service normally using 'service ntop start'. Then you will be able to connect to port 3000

Sorry no experience with jnettop!

Thanks Tim for your help. Got it to work now.

A quick question. In the FAQ I detected a post about ntop being somewhat memory usage heavy.

Dou you recommend I only start it when I need it or is it no worry if I leave it running?

Regards,
Mitja

No problem! it can use a bit of memory, if your server is lightly loaded you won't notice the difference. Would only consider disabling it if you were short on RAM....here it seems to use about 40MB

Run the 'top' command to see

Yup, I see in system resources in the ClearOS web GUI that it is quite a load on the CPU and memory.
I guess I will only run it when needed.

Ive got a similar problem, the http traffic proxy monitoring is not enough for a client. I tried to both:

yum install ntop

&

jnettop

Do I have to download them and compile them from sauce? Or is there something in the repo I can use?

Hej btadmin.

I can give you detailed info on how I got app-jnettop to work. But I dont know if this app is what you seek.
It is not what I wanted exactly.

For ntop installation I would have to check to see if I can remember how to get that one to install. I don't remember if I found a post explaining this or did I do it by trail-error...
