TOPIC: Help me in setting up bandwidth management

Help me in setting up bandwidth management 3 Years, 4 Months ago
Good day!
I'm using ClearOS in my home network(used as a router/ftp/samba). I need to set up bandwidth management/shaping for this scenario:
-internet connection: 2Mb
- 3 PCs with dynamic bandwidht allocation: PC1 should get always minimum 1500kb, PC2 and PC3 should get 256kb each, but when any of the PCs is turned off then more bandwidth should be allocated to a working machines. The LAN speed should not be affected by those rules (full 100Mb between PCs)

How to arichive that? Please help!
Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Grzegorz

In Gateway > Bandwidth and QoS > Bandwidth

Set the following

IP Address - Destination: PC1 IP
Port - Destination
Direction - Download
Rate - 1500 kbps
Greed: High

Nickname - Download_to_workstationPC2
IP Address - Destination: PC2 IP
Port - Destination
Direction - Download
Rate - 256 kbps
Greed: High

Nickname - Download_to_workstationPC3
IP Address - Destination: PC3 IP
Port - Destination
Direction - Download
Rate - 256 kbps
Greed: High

Hi frida,

First thing you need to do is to confirm the real up and download speed you have and not what the ISP sold you:

Speed Test

Once you know what you have, you can decide how you split up your bandwidth.

Check this post for additional information about this subject:

For information about the difference between bits and Bytes I would advise you to look at the end of the following page:

hello John;
thanks a lot for the help i really appreciate, im just wondering about why is it recommended that i choose a rate of max 95%, or so, of my actual rate to set for the interface? any thoughts?
Best Regards.

Hi frida,

You are welcome.
I don't know where it says that, but I think it's because the maximum bandwidth can fluctuate and maybe also, so there is always a little space for additional data.

Imagine a highway were there is no space between the cars and one where there is space in between ... what situation do you think will create the least amount of traffic jams and accidents ... ?!?

Anyway ... when 100% of the bandwidth is required and available it will use it, but there is no reason to create rules for 100% of your available bandwidth.

I hope this answers your question.

Greetings,

John
