Ok, Right now i'm using the tvheadend (backend) on a Ubuntu 9.10 because of driver issue,, but i'm hoping to get the COS with Tims kernel up and running in a few days.
I use the XBMC on Win 7 as the frontend, witch i am REALY pleased with.
Conections to tvheadend or mythtv is a dream. just add source (Video) htsp:// x.x.x.x:9982 for the Tvheaden or mythtv://username:password.ip adress and so on There you have a compeet media center

Very interesting topic. Also a big feature for the ClearOS Home Server edition.

I have to try this sometime. I have a old Hauppauge Win PVR-TV-500 (DVB-C). This is for analog television. So i can test this. I now have a UPC Set top box (digital television), but i'm not happy with it. So maybe i can use mythtv on ClearOS, and build later a htpc or buy a mac mini.

Only there are a few problems The first problem i want to watch digital television. The only way to go (Netherlands, when the provider is UPC) is buy a satellite dish (DVB-S). Where i'm living we have UPC as cabel provider. UPC and a htpc is a no go (digital signal is encrypted and the smart card is only usable on the UPC set top-box). Second problem i think my neighbors are not very happy when i'm installing a satellite dish...

Maybe there is a other solution using DVB-T, Digitenne. Only i heard the signal is terrible... It is a MPEG-2 stream (2-3Mbit).

I have only experience with a htpc with a analog card. What are your experiences with digital television? Do you have DVB-S or DVB-T. Any dutch users with experience?

Here, in the flemmish part of Belgium, digital television by cable (DVB-C) is encrypted to. You must use a setup-box of the provider and you cannot use MythTV. That's why I still have analog cable. So I can use MythTV with two Hauppaugge PVR-150 cards (that's the same as one PVR-500 card).

DVB-S and DVB-T can work with MythTV.
I've no experience with DVB-T here, but I did found this. I like it, and I will give it a try once...

Thanks for your reply. I will try to install MythTV on a old test box, and use my Hauppauge PVR-500. Later on i will try to switch to digital television. I will keep you updated so we can exchange some experience.

Being a Mythtv and Linux newbie i need some help. I'm trying to setup Mythtv backend on my ClearOS server. First i installed everything on a old test box. The problem the test box is to old. So now i installed everything on my production server. (i have a backup)

What i did:

- installed my Hauppauge PVR-350. (Hardware report shows the PVR-350)

- installed MythTV backend. (yum --enablerepo=base-extras install mythtv-setup mythtv-backend)


How to proceed further? I think i have to configure Mythtv backend, but how. There is no gui...

What I did after installing MythTV-backend on my ClearOS box:

- on a windows client I did install XLaunch (an X server for Windows):

- With XLaunch: open an X window

- log in to your ClearOS box on your windows cliënt with Putty - after enabling X11 forwarding to your windows client in your putty session. (Connection > SSH > X11 > enable X11 forwarding + X display location = localhost)

- in the Putty CLI you start 'mythtv-setup' - et voilà: MythTV setup screen comes on in your XLaunch window.

- Now you can make the configuration of your MythTV backend. (much information about this on several MythTV websites)

Maybe there is a way to open the Mythtv-setup screen on your ClearOS box, but I'm too newbie for that.

get mythbackend to start when the system starts:

/sbin/chkconfig mythbackend on
/sbin/service mythbackend restart

After some googling I found that with these two commands Mythbackend did start on boot, and mythbackend.log was activated (/var/log/mythtv)

I have one linux-client in my home network (Linux Mint) with MythTV Frontend on it.
On the windows clients, I work with:
- MythWeb for looking at the tv shedules and setting the recordings
- MythTV Player or XMBC for watching Live-Tv or Recordings
