MythTV How To? 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Hello once more one and all.

I would like to run MythTV on my CC5 server. Manly because this mean's i only have to run the one computer 24 hour's a day. I belive i only whant to run the backend on it as im not realy planning on using the CC box for play back.

So far iv followed the How To found on the old CC site. Now iv been able to follow this ok ish.

At first i got as far as
"Configure your MythTV backend by running mythtv-setup by using SSH X forwarding, or the old school remote X way (DISPLAY=192.168.2.202:0 mythtv-setup)."
This stoped me for a while as i could not get this command to run via ssh.
After a few weeks i decided to install X using the instruction to install MythTV-Frontend, this finaly allowed me to run mythtv-setup localy on CC.

This is where iv got a little lost as to what to do next. I suppose what i want is an idiots guide for CentOS 5 if any one could point me in the right direction. Or if some one could do a more in depth How To for CC that would be grate.

Thanks in advance for any input from any one

Hi, having very little knowledge of MythTV (Peter might be able to help here)...assuming the backend config worked ok, and the service is running, I think you now have to configure the 'frontend' for your client PC. Are you also installing the frontend on CC or on another PC?

For use in windows you can get the following:
www.mythtv.org/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Que...TV_run_on_Windows.3F
www.mythtv.org/wiki/Windows_Port

Thanks Tim
Thats grate last time i looked MythTV was linux (Mac) only. In ansawer to you question, no im not planing on installing the frontend on CC.
When i ran mythtv-setup i was expecting more to do with tunning in TV stations and the like. Was a while ago that i did it now and cant remember all the in's and out's. Think it just asked me about the DB stuff which seemed to go ok. Ill have to give this windows front end a go and see what can be done with it.
I was going to install a linux distro or two on a test laptop to start, but this should mean i dont have to . Not that these any thing wrong with linux distro's before you linux fan boys out there see this.

Just windows i can use well and sort when things go wrong! Which belive it or not is not that offen these days (on my own machine). It the other less tech savy people i live with that have all them problem s

Hi Duncan,

I run both the frontend and backend on ClearOS 5.1 Beta 1. The backend runs on a hefty Dell server, the minimalist frontend runs on a MacMini. I wrote the howto, and it's definitely a bit spotty!

It looks like the new 0.22 version is almost out -- a release candidate was made available last week! When I update the RPMs and such (likely in December), I'll go through the howto and clean it up. I am really looking forward to the new version. The MythTV UI was getting a bit dated.

MythTV requires a lot of handholding. It's not really a MythTV issue, but a media industry issue. 720i, 1080p, strange aspect ratios on DVDs, codecs, surround sound, interlacing, file containers, PAL/NTSC etc. I had to really learn the lingo and understand all the technologies. I had to become one with the "transcode" command.

Hehe - the transcode man pages and the mjpegtools man pages are the only ones I have ever had to resort to actually printing, and the hardcopy has become rather dog-eared with use. For some reason could never commit that lot to memory

Thanks for your replys.
I think jugging by the fact that Tony & Peter find it a challenge
I may give it a miss and go back to my MediaPortal or give Mythbuntu a try.

At least untill its a little more friendly to the avrage linux newbe. Might be waiting some time mind

If MythTV gets a "following" on ClearOS, it will likely be as the backend system only. You will only want to have one box humming 24/7 (ClearOS of course!) so adding the MythTV backend would be a bonus. You don't need special graphics drivers or particularly fast hardware on the backend It's the frontend that needs all the horsepower and fiddling to get the audio/graphics card tuned for HD playback.

Duncan, Don't be put off by my append earlier... It's simpler if all you are doing is just recording and playback...

I was doing all sorts of video editing such as...
removing video noise
resyncing sound
removing black borders
stripping the sound, balancing the stereo channels and recombining
converting between formats
removing sections of video
joining video files
fixing up bad interlace

etc etc
