Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
Hi, i followed the guide linked above and now i can see in my finder (from my mac) a new directory called system. If i try to log into with username and passwd (set right in AppleVolumes.default ) i can't log, but if i try to connect from Connection at Server at afp://192.168.1.1 i can access to it with the same name and passwd used before. Then i try to lauch timemachine and i can see my hd called Timemachine and choosing it i have a sparsebundle error. Why i can't access to system folder? why i get the sparsebundle error?
Thanks in advance.

Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
I have another error while trying to compile.

I installed the db4-devel first.
Installed: db4-devel.i386 0:4.3.29-10.el5
Complete!

But when I run the ./configure command I get this error.

I see that the only directories for db4 are in /usr/bin/db41 & /usr/bin/db42. Could someone explain why we have 2 versions installed and why 43 doesn't show up since I just installed the db4-devel which shows v4.3 being installed. ???

Also, the link also includes installing libssl-dev and cracklib2-dev. Do I need to be finding and installing these two libraries?

Thanks.

Ahhh. I see that Netatalk 2.1 (latest stable release) was what I downloaded. It requires db4.6 at least. If I go to Netatalk 2.0.5 then it compiles OK.

Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
Hi all.

Could you help with the missing mss-mdns.i386 that is supposed to be installed.

Did I do something wrong in how I installed or do I have to download from somewhere else? If I have to download, then is there a recommended source for the file?

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers!

Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
After some reading I found a version of the nss-mdns to install.
Code:

wget ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/atrpms.net/el5-i386/atrpms/stable/nss-mdns-0.10-2.el5.i386.rpm

rpm -Uhv nss-mdns-0.10-2.el5.i386.rpm

So far so good.(???)

Now I have completed the instructions but I can't connect to the server using afp or from the "Go:Connect to Server". I also see the server in the finder window under "Shared".

I get the error:
Connection failed.
There was an error connection to the server. Check the server name or IP addres and try again.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I've done wrong?

Thanks.

Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
Looks like there is a bigger issue at play here.

When I looked at the webconfig:System:Services I find that there is a new entry.

At the bottom I have:
Non-Standard Services
Service Status On boot
AppleTalk/AppleShare Stopped Automatic

And Software is not installed - netatalk at the top.

But I did install netatalk 2.0.5 (after trying to install 2.1 first).

AppleTalk in the service menu will not start.

/etc/init.d/atalk start
Starting AppleTalk services:
Starting cnid_metad: [ OK ]
Starting afpd:afpd is already running (pid = 28564), or the lock file is stale.
[FAILED]

I'm not sure what this is all about, but a reboot didn't fix things.

Any suggestions?

For your issue:
etc/init.d/atalk start
Starting AppleTalk services:
Starting cnid_metad: [ OK ]
Starting afpd:afpd is already running (pid = 28564), or the lock file is stale.
[FAILED]

You could try a "service atalk restart" and see if it cleans itself up and starts OK. If not, have a look to see if afpd is running ("ps aux | grep afpd"). If you see an entry with a pid (the second column) of 28564 then it is already running. If it is not running, kill the lock file which is probably something like /var/lock/subsys/afpd which will be a file of 0 bytes. Then start afpd again ("service afpd start").

These are general linux steps. I have no knowledge of AppleTalk

Re:Time Machine 2 Years ago
Hi Nick.

thanks for the help. It fixed the problem.

I still have the webconfig showing AppleTalk stopped and Netatalk not installed. This seems to be a separate issue as compared to not being able to connect via afp to the server. So I'm going to try to get the connection working first then figure out why webconfig shows the wrong info.

I've been messing around with this for a few hours now. Google is sometimes my friend....

I found a site that suggested a command to see what is going wrong.
Code:

service atalk restart && /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart && tail -n70 /var/log/messages

So I get:
Code:

service atalk restart && /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon restart && tail -n70 /var/log/messages

The only error looks like the line that say
Code:

afpd[7437]: uam: uam not found (status=-1)

.
From searching, it looks like this is a problem with openssl not being available. it seems that for some licensing issues, netatalk is built without SSL Support and thus uams_dhx.so is not available.
I don't know if I need this but seems like I needed to add an additional flag on the config/make of netatalk.

I did install libssl-dev & cracklib2-dev & db4-devel. And used
Code:

./configure --enable-redhat --with-mutex=x86/gcc-assembly

I think I have to add
Code:

--with-ssl-dir

at the end. But not sure. The instructions were fixing this using a Ubuntu install.
But I don't know why everyone else who installed following the directions didn't have this problem but I do?? Help. I'm so confused.
