From my experience . . .
I used to run CC 4.3. I am the one that wrote up the howto to get Asterisk/FreePBX going on it. I gave up running Asterisk on CC 4.3. It was not that it did not work, it was crackling issues. Whenever my server would get a decent load, the calls would go crackly. This is something to consider. I went ahead and started using PBXinaFlash. They have a pre-built CentOS based asterisk. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get it installed and configured. It was one of the smarter things I have done in a long time. I miss having all the apps running on one box, but I do not miss the scratchy calls on occasion. (That did not pass the wife test!)
They have PBXinaFlash running on Atom based machines and you can do a completely low power setup cheaply.
For phones, I agree Aastra are the best. Grandstreams are cheap, but work. For converters, I use Linksys 3102's. It allows me to plug in a basic wireless phone system into the PBX. I have never had issues with Digium cards and ran one in my CC 4.3 box. At this time, I am not running a card as it is easier to just run 3102's for what I need.
