TOPIC: Kernel Updating?
**
#7560
Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Tim, et al:

Good work...I have used it for about two weeks in production and it has worked well.

Stupid question....have you tried adding (or changing) the ext3 drives to ext 4 with the your new kernel? If so, did you use "ext4" or "ext4dev" in your /etc/fstab file?

Thanks!

Hi David, as far as I'm aware there are no plans to formally integrate this into ClearOS, as it is intentionally based around an older, more stable, more secure kernel core from the Red Hat Enterprise editions.

There maybe hidden issues with a relatively new kernel which may not appear during my or others testing. Different combinations of hardware etc. All of which will be unsupported by ClearOS...therefore it is provided on an 'as-is' basis for the community. You never know there could be a community driven 'home' edition yet!

Hi Arch, that's great news! thanks for letting me know - not tried ext4 support yet! will have a go later on this week

I can imagine ... hehe
This thread is a mega success and I suspect that it will only get bigger ...

That's what you get when you are the first person who develops & discovers new and improved bleeding edge stuff ... hehe
Just kidding man ... take your time and don't do it for me ...
IMHO ... this should have been implemented by the ClearOS developers team, because it would be a valuable addition for business and home users ... but I guess their hands are already full.
Anyway ... all of you do great stuff so, keep up the good work & don't worry be happy ...

Thanks Tim for giving us chance to test your new kernel! Worked well except ftdi driver issues. Btw, cant disable ipv6 any more. None of the previously used methods seem to work. When i switch back to old kernel it works again. Any ideas about how to solve this?

Sorry no idea, what is the old method that you use to disable ipv6?

Do you have any more information on your problems with the ftdi driver?

Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi Tim,

I have noticed a list of updates waiting that came out a week ago.
Now that I have installed your kernel, PHP 5.2 and the latest Java ... would this mean that some updates no longer install automated when I have Software Updates "Enabled" ... ?!?
Or should I manually apply these:
samba - Samba SMB client and server 3.4.7-1.1.v5 03/12/10
samba-client - Samba (SMB) client programs. 3.4.7-1.1.v5 03/12/10
samba-common - Files used by both Samba servers and clients. 3.4.7-1.1.v5 03/12/10
samba-winbind - Samba winbind 3.4.7-1.1.v5 03/12/10
tdb-tools - The TDB tools 1.1.3-5.1.v5 03/12/10
samba-schema - Samba LDAP schema 3.4.7-1.1.v5 03/12/10
libtdb - The TDB library and tools 1.1.3-5.1.v5 03/12/10
libtalloc - The talloc library 1.3.0-5.1.v5 03/12/10

Hi John,

I noticed that the updates (making SP1) do not auto install even tho it is set to auto. (on the release kernel). I believe that this was the case for a few updates before SP1, so might be another bug, but its not related to the kernel update.

Hi John and David, yes thats right - the kernel is separate from the package update system, and you can upgrade packages normally. You may have noticed you can have more than one kernel installed at the same time (although not running), unlike other packages.

Be careful with PHP5.2.x, this may have to be reinstalled if ClearOS decide to upgrade their 5.1.6 version to an intermediate version. This hasn't happened yet though, and I anticipate RHEL6 will be the next major upgrade.

Just a small note - when ClearOS upgrades to the next major RHEL code base it may require you to install the RHEL updated kernel during the upgrade, in which case you would...and then just re-enable the 2.6.31 kernel...in theory anyway as the 2.6.31.x kernel is likely to be newer than RHEL/ ClearOS for a long time

Hi Tim and David,

Thanks for your clarification and the warning for an up and coming PHP and kernel update.
From now on, because it doesn't work anyway, I will set Software Updates to "Disabled" so I won't be surprised by it.

Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 9 Months ago
hey all,

first post here. glad to be apart of the ClearOS community.

previously i was with Endian Firewall, decided to try CC, and wow glad i switched.

Tim, thanks you for the newer kernels, they are much appreciated.

there is one little problem though..
currently i am running "kernel-2.6.32.11-99.timb3.i686"

for my cpu scaling, i run a new application called granola http://grano.la/help/ which ran fine on the default CC kernel, 2.6.18-164.11.1.v5.

however with your kernel, it fails to start, complaining that

/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor
and
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_governor

dont exist. running the default kernel, it does. O__o

any idea on how to remedy this ?

thanks again
