Hi,
Just wondering if i will be able to do regular updates with this kernel like the current one installed.

I am just trying to decide weather or not i really need this or not but i do love to try new things...so if all does not play nice with my box i can just delete and reboot into my current kernel without any plroblems.

Hi Krod, yeah you can still run normal updates - you are permitted to use any kernel you wish...it's only when you are doing a major release upgrade that it may attempt to install another kernel. As you say you can easily revert to the old one if required.

Hey thanks, I installed the kernel and it works great, the system is a little more snappy too. The only problem im having is with the x server, probly does not like my video card but thats not a big deal for me i don use a screen for this box. Amd X2 2.4 Nvidia chipset with 2gigs of ram and an older nvida card.

Hi Tim,

Tim Burgess wrote:
I've applied the patch to create a custom iptables RPM with connlimit support (for 2.6.31). Just tested on my *.timb6 kernel and all works fine
ftp://starlane.gotdns.org/iptables/iptables-1.3.5-5.1custom.i386.rpm

Note that future updates to iptables may break this, although it appears this patch has been incorporated upstream and will be backported to RHEL5.4 at some stage

I am good at breaking stuff , but even after reading this link about ip tables, I am quiet novice when it comes to implementing bleeding edge stuff so ... ... would you be so kind to do a step by step install of this ... ?!?

My goal is to limit the maximum amount of connections for one client, located behind my ClearOS box.

Thanks,

John

Hi John, will have a look at knocking together a how to for connlimit but in the mean time check out the syntax for specifying connlimit type iptables rules here
linux.die.net/man/8/iptables

You would need to add these to /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.local

UPDATE: I have updated the kernel to 2.6.31.12-174.2.22 which is now part of the Fedora 12 updates. It includes a lot of additional patches and specifically nouveau (Open source nvidia driver) fixes, including some for NV04/05 type chipsets which may help with the graphics diplsay problems you were experiencing John

Kernel Changelog
osdir.com/ml/general/2010-02/msg24836.html

This kernel will be available at about 2AM GMT when it sync's up called
download.clearfoundation.com/community/t....2.22.timb1.i686.rpm

Installed on my VM here and seems to be working well

Great to hear of the speed increases Krod.... regarding your display problem can you try and do the following to install the nv module?
Code:

yum install xorg-x11-drv-nv

My overall impression of boot up times / responsiveness is that it is also improved, certainly within a VM, although i've done no specific benchmarking yet, maybe for a rainy day
