Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Thanks Tim,

You are right about "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" ... it's too huge (for me) to check for anything.
In "/var/log/dmesg" there is a repeating error with:
Code:

[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PGRAPH_NOTIFY - nSource: ILLEGAL_MTHD, nStatus: PROTECTION_FAULT
[drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PGRAPH_NOTIFY - Ch 0/2 Class 0x###a Mthd 0x###c Data 0x########c:0x########

I will try to e-mail them to you.

About the "conntrack issue" ... I don't have a clue what this is ...

Thanks for all your help Tim and I hope that my display issue doesn't give you to many problems.
Take your time, because for now I did not discover any other problems, but it would be nice to be able to see if everything boots up ok.

Greetings,

John

Sorry ... I don't know how to do this.

Sure ... but the problem is that a lot of people are currently playing on my game servers so I'd rather not reboot my ClearOS box now.

I will let you know what happens if I edit the requested line(s) at a later time.

Ok great my email is timb80 @ yahoo.com
As a small tip you can navigate / read through large logs by using a console command called less, e.g.
Code:

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

This means you can then use the arrows or Page UP / DOWN to scroll through the reams of text
If you want to search for specific items use grep
Code:

grep -i searchphrase /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The conntrack issue was the reason the webconfig network status pages (connection monitor) was blank - fixed now in *.timb6

Looks like the open source nvidia driver is having problems (nouveau). Hopefully the kernel command line options will help when you get a chance

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your e-mail ... I hope that not everyone on this forum will start e-mailing your mailbox until it's full ...

I am currently running kernel timb4 and you asked me to change it into timb5 ... ?!?:

/etc/grub.conf
Code:

title Linux (2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686 ro root=LABEL=/1
initrd /initrd-2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686.img

requested line(s) contain timb5:
Code:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.timb5.i686 ro root=LABEL=/ video=vesafb vga=791

Code:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.timb5.i686 ro root=LABEL=/ nouveau.noagp=1

I think I will wait and download version timb6, when it is ready, before I make any changes.

John

Sorry yes - thought you had updated to timb5 already, no problems - *timb6.rpm is uploaded now anyway
download.clearfoundation.com/community/timb80/kernel/

If no one has any objections I will remove the older testing kernels from the mirror to keep the size down

Hi Tim,

No problem ... and thanks.
I will download it later this day and this time I will try to remember to post the installation procedure.
And even if I did have objections ...

John

Hi Tim,

Before continuing with my attempts to install timb6 I can report the following:
Code:

[root@system ~]# wget http://download.clearfoundation.com/community/timb80/kernel/kernel-2.6.31.5-127.timb6.i686.rpm

Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
   1:kernel                 ########################################### [100%]
[root@system ~]#

I changed the 1st line and the letters became really small, but that wasn't the biggest problem.
I almost decided to do a clean install before attempting to boot up 1 more time.
I hope this picture is readable:

I was able to boot up again by 'simply' (not at the time) selecting the previous timb4 kernel and selecting a (something like edit the command line) ... pfew ...
Now I will try the 2nd option you gave me for /etc/grub.conf
Code:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-127.timb6.i686 ro root=LABEL=/ nouveau.noagp=1

Greetings,

John

EDIT:
The last option also did not work as you can see in the picture above with bigger fonts.
The font was better, but the result was the same.
Now I will try to restore the original line in /ect/grub.conf and see if that makes any difference.

EDIT:
I succeeded in booting up the latest kernel timb6 without problems.
The only thing that didn't change is that the screen goes blank and for now I will leave it like that, because editing "/etc/grub.conf", was no success.

Greetings,

John

Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hello,
I am testing this kernel, and it works very well. It recognizes more hardware (a new ethernet).
But I want to test the option of limiting the maximum number of connections per user in iptables. If I want to do this, the kernel must support the option, but neither the original nor the new kernel supports it.
Is it possible to add the function --conlimit to the kernel?
For example: iptables -p tcp --syn --dport 80 -m connlimit --connlimit-above 4 -s 192.168.2.5 -j REJECT

Thank you very much!

Thanks John, your screen capture is an odd one - but I think the conclusion was that neither boot options helped with your graphics card problem. I received your email so will have a look when I get a mo

Luckas - the new kernel supports connlimit, it is now built into the new kernel. However it appears that existing version of iptables will not work with the new kernel without further patching
Code:

iptables -m connlimit -h
modprobe xt_connlimit
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -m connlimit --connlimit-above 4 -j REJECT
##results in /var/log/messages :-
kernel: iptables: connlimit match: invalid size 32 !=16

Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
It's your lucky day it appears there is already a patch for iptables 1.3.5 so that it will work with newer kernels
bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=520797
bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=360055

I've applied the patch to create a custom iptables RPM with connlimit support (for 2.6.31). Just tested on my *.timb6 kernel and all works fine
ftp://starlane.gotdns.org/iptables/iptables-1.3.5-5.1custom.i386.rpm

Note that future updates to iptables may break this, although it appears this patch has been incorporated upstream and will be backported to RHEL5.4 at some stage
