Ok - new update! added the ClearOS logo, and fixed the other minor bits and pieces headers now build properly too, and ironed out some config differences between the i686 and PAE kernels. This is practically the complete thing now, unless we find some odd problems

I will upload shortly, ref kernels *.timb4, and they will be available on the mirror in about 3hours

Great Duncan, would be very pleased for anyone to try this out, the more the merrier. I can't test every hardware configuration in the world so every little helps (to coign a UK supermarket marketing phrase)

Hi Tim,

If you don't mind, I will give it a shot too.
Not that my findings will be of any help ... to be honest, I don't even know if I get as far as installing it successfully ... but at least I can keep the pieces that remain ... hehe
Do the install instructions in this post still stand, because I see different versions when I look at the download.clearfoundation.com/community/timb80/kernel/ link ... ?!?

I will wait until you give a sign that it has all been compiled and what ever it takes to get this done.

John

Hi John, the latest is version with timb4 attached

To explain the different versions, for normal i686 machines use the kernel-x.rpm
For machines that need to use more than 4GB of ram use kernel-PAE

For both versions kernel-devel is provided in case you need to build your own modules etc... not required
Additionally there is also the kernel-headers RPM for compiling against...not required

So in a nutshell, give the basic kernel-X.rpm a go
Code:

wget http://download.clearfoundation.com/community/timb80/kernel/kernel-2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686.rpm
rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686.rpm
reboot

The new kernel will become the default for when you boot up

Hi Tim,

Thanks for sharing this.
Before I did the update I made a backup of my settings and connected a screen to my ClearOS box.
I did the kernel update with the following results:
After the first [OK] the screen went blank.
The hard disk led was blinking for 20 minutes before I attempted to see if I was able to connect to it again.
So far the update was successful, but the screen stays blank, so without PuTTy, I am unable to access it.

I did not discover a speed improvement yet when making a change in the Firewall Group settings, but I suppose that it's because I still use low-end hardware.

Shutting down takes about 2 minutes and booting up about 5 (I left a WinSCP window open, that tries to reconnect every 5 seconds), even when the hard disk led keeps on flickering for about 20 minutes.
After reboot still no screen.

Hardware info: (this is my test system)
Processors 1
Model Pentium II (Deschutes)
CPU Speed 399.16 Mhz
Cache Size 512.00 KB

IDE Devices none
SCSI Devices - ATA Maxtor 2F020L0 (Direct-Access)
- BENQ DVD-ROM 16X (CD-ROM)

Any tips on what I should focus on, while testing this updated kernel ... ?!?

John

This is the last image that I see before the screen goes blank:

Sorry about the quality
Is there anything I should worry about ... ?!?

Thanks John, nothing there unusual, usually you should get a list of services starting up with [OK]. Odd that yours goes blank at the udev stage, but by all accounts seems to carry on booting ok - likely to be a graphics problem, what hardware are you running? Can you try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see if it will return

BTW To return to normal just select the old kernel 2.6.18-164 on reboot from the green grub menu

Hi Tim,

It's my pleasure, I should thank you ... hehe
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 did not make any difference.
The hardware info I previously posted is all the info I have.
It's a donated system, currently running as my ClearOS box.

Thanks for the tip of how to return to the original kernel.
Will I have to select it manually after every reboot, or does it select the last used kernel automatically ... ?!?
Because I usually don't have a screen connected to it.

Greetings,

John

Re:Kernel Updating? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Thanks John - to return to the old one, you need to edit your grub config to change the default, they are number from 0 being the first entry, 1 for the second etc.. so from Putty or a terminal you can run
Code:

nano /etc/grub.conf
##look for default=0
##change to default=1 for the next boot entry
press Ctrl+X to exit, press Y to save changes
reboot

To remove the kernel if you wish to take it off altogether run
Code:

rpm -e kernel-2.6.31.5-127.timb4.i686
