TOPIC: Kernel Updating?

Kernel Updating? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Is there an updated kernel avail? I would like to play with squid 3.1, but need 2.6.25 or newer to take advantage of some of the new features. If its possible, can anyone point me to a howto that wont break any of the functionality of ClearOS?

Thanks

ClearOS starts with the kernel source code used in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The advantage: stability. A system that you have installed today will run for a few years without the typical kernel upgrade "surprises". The disadvantage: the current kernel is getting a little old -- version 2.6.18 with many hardware drivers backported from 2.6.24-ish.

We certainly would like to see a more bleeding edge kernel available even if it is something that is provided as-is (unsupported). Not enough hours in the day at the moment!

Hi Peter,

I know that you guys have so many different things on the go at the moment that resources are stretched.

Your all doing a v good job!

Perhaps you could put Squid 3 on the Clear road map page?

Just as a heads up i've rolled a new kernel 2.6.31.5 from the Fedora 12 sources which (after a lot of head bashing!...did I say a lot?) now boots and runs ok here. I need to do some more testing but if it works out ok I could upload it for others to try

There are still a lot of loose ends...but it works!

Hi Tim,

I'm curious to know why you went for a fedora core, and not a RHEL core? (being a linux newbie, I would have thought that the RHEL core would be more compatible with COS?), or are the cores very similar between distributions these days.

Hi David, Fedora is essentially bleeding edge RHEL, RHEL5 is based on around Fedora 5/6ish...and I think RHEL6 is assumed to be based on around Fedora 10/11 when it becomes available

Wow... nice work Tim! That's not a trivial exercise to say the least. Keep us posted.

Hi Tim,
That's awesome that you rolled up a new kernel. I would love to test it as well. so far, have you lost any functionality with the clearos packages? I'm also a linux newbie, and have been learning as I go alone, so this may be a stupid question. How does the centos kernels compare vs the fedora...or are they pretty much one in the same?

At present it has the IMQ patch and all the netfilter / iptables options turned on, all networking related modules are also turned on. Only one i'm not sure about is VPN / PPTP as I don't use it.

Fedora Kernels are bleeding edge, I.e. they have all the new features, new drivers etc. CentOS kernels which are essentially RHEL are based on a much older (2.6.18.x) and consequently more stable kernel and bugfixed!. What they then do is backport all important security fixes and and some driver updates to this older kernel from around 2.6.24 ish...RHEL promotes stability over features and this is reflected in the kernels they produce.

I will try and find somewhere to upload it as it's a little large for my cable connection

Tim,

I can organize getting you access to the ClearFoundation mirrors... no problem there. In the not-too-distant future, we'll have a new build system in place where you can submit a build and have it appear in a "testing" repository automagically.

At present it has the IMQ patch and all the netfilter / iptables options turned on, all networking related modules are also turned on. Only one i'm not sure about is VPN / PPTP as I don't use it.

IMQ and netfilter are the important ones. The PPTP patches were integrated into the mainstream kernel, so those patches are no longer required. There's a nice-to-have patch for multiwan (multiwan will still work without it) and a couple of other minor/cosmetic patches.
