TOPIC: Problem with clearconsole
#4258
Problem with clearconsole 2 Years, 3 Months ago
I have installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.1 in Standalone mode without GUI option. After the installation and after the first reboot I don't get the Clearconsole (red box asking for administrator password) but instead I get this text on tty1:

system login: clearconsole (automatic login)
Last login: Mon Jan 25 12:59:03 on tty1

Debugging so far:

1) After restart, if I login in tty2 and do "ifdown eth0", the console immediately appears on tty1. I can do "ifup eth0", but I can't log in the console because lynks can't find localhost:82 and it times out after a few seconds.

2) I tried replacing the line in /etc/inittab:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --autologin=clearconsole tty1
with this one:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
After reboot, I get the normal login screen on tty1 but of course, no clearconsole.

3) Tried it on virtual and on phisical machine, same result.

Does anyone have any ideas or the same problem?

I had this problem on my friend's server as well...he was using an HP Vectra as his server and I suspect it has something to do with a video card issue. I didn't worry about fixing or troubleshooting it at the time because I just went on a workstation and used the browser to configure the settings.

I know I can get to web configuration remotely but since this shoul be a production server, I am worried about this obvious error. First, it is obvious that clearconsole hangs until I disable the network adapter and second, it is obvious that configuration through lynx isn't working no matter what I do at that stage.

I tried installing ClarkConnect Enterprise 5.0 on the same machine and everything is working the way it's supposed to, I can get to the console right after the installation without any problems.

I tried reinstalling the ClearOS 5.1, but the same thing happened again. I don't like this and I think I'll stick with the ClarkConnect Enterprise until I find either solution or explanation for this behaviour.

Hi,

I have posed about this issue on another topic - you are correct, you get the autologon message on an unsupported graphics card (a very basic sever onboard (non 3D) works 99% of the time)...not designed for running on 'dometic PC' boxes with fancy cards. - find an old server!

I had this same problem using a dell desktop PC.

After letting it sit for 10 minutes it finally logged into the visual console.

After reboot it works near instantly now, I think it is just some sort of problem on first boot.

I would say I was right that it wasn't a video cadr issue after all:

Not quite my style. I like to know exactly why something isn't working the way it's supposed to.
