TOPIC: Install CD Won't Boot

Install CD Won't Boot 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Hi all,

I was trying to do an install of ClearOS this afternoon, but when it came time to boot the install cd, it wouldn't go very far before rebooting the machine.

I get the logo, and the prompt to either "press enter to install" or "rescue and enter to enter rescue mode".

I press Enter, it loads one item, the while loading the second item (I can't recall exactly, some image) the machine reboots.

Could this just be a bad CD? Hardware incompatibility?

Hopefully someone can help!

Hi D,

Probably ... I'm not sure at the moment.
Did you confirm that it's not an MD5 sum problem or maybe the CD / DVD player or burner ... or maybe even the IDE / SATA cable ... ?!?
The only other thing I can think of is to change NIC's, but I would expect that there is another problem, because you would get an error message about that at a later time.
Did you previously installed CC successfully on this box ... ?!?
If you previously used it with another OS, maybe it's an idea to re-install that and to do a hardware scan of some sort.

Good luck,

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply. I've confirmed the ISO's MD5 is correct, and I'm trying a new CD burn now.

The existing system does have a working CD/HD so far as I can tell. I've recently used them both to re-install the existing OS, so they shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I agree the NICs probably shouldn't be a concern until later since it seems to crash and reboot when simply loading the CDs install image.

At any rate, I'll try the new CD and see what happens.

Got the same result with the second CD, and with a CD burned from the ISO of the install without SP1. Both reboot after loading the initrd.img (might be slightly misspelled)

Perhaps something about the hardware it doesn't like? The current install is Linux as well, IPCOP.

Are there any options that I can set from that Boot prompt aside from rescue?

Hi D,

You are welcome.

Generally, ClearOS does a good job at auto-detecting hardware and most mass-market network cards are supported. We recommend avoiding the latest available hardware since drivers may not yet be available.

might not help, but have you tried booting with the kernal boot parameters "nosmp, noapic, noacpi, etc" ??

Randal has a good point; however since I'm no linux guru I can't add much more.

Prior to burning another CD (as recommended below), install some sort of virtualization solution and test the img you have now in a virtual machine. If you can install ClearOS via the .iso or the CD you've burned, then you know it is a hardware issue requiring at the very least the appropriate boot parameters; if possible.

Have you considered a bad cd burner/media? Did you burn the image at max speed? Since the MD5 hash checks out, try using a program dedicated to burning .iso files such as ImgBurn and burn one (CD) at the slower detected speeds, 12x (for example) to be on the safe side. If you really want to make sure its a good burn, burn it at 4x (if detected) and you can rule out a bad burn, especially if tested in a virtual machine. Should that fail, it may be a faulty burner, since your system seems to be linux compatiable.

I'd also list your hardware; someone may have experience troubleshooting a similar system with ClearOS.

The commands Randal pointed out are what I was looking for. Since I'm fairly confident of the box's hardware working (since I'm using it to connect right now), I suspect it's some incompatibility. I think that noapic might do it, I've had to use that on older hardware before.

I've also tried the CD on a slightly newer machine, and I could get into the actual installer, no the media is good.

I think actually I'll go with the newer machine in the end, use the other one as a backup in case.

Thanks all for the advice.
