ClearOS on HP ML110 G7 Smart ArrayB110i SATA RAID 1 Year, 7 Months ago
Hello all,

I'm new in this cummunity, so please, excuse my inexpertise...

I've been trying to install ClearOS 5.2 from installation CD created from ISO File recently downloaded from this site.

The Setup process starts fine and captures all parameters until the step where is about to format and create partitions over the disk. At this point one message is displayed:

"Unabled to find any devices needed to for this installation type. Would you like to manually select a driver or use a driver disk?"

It seems that the problem is that the setup program can't find a fixed media where to create partitios, format, and copy the files. This server has a Smart Array B110i SATA RAID and I guess I would be able to continue with the installarion with the drivers. The problem is that HP only has on its support web site drivers on RPM format.

I think, at this point of the installation I would need .ko files. Where I can find them, or create them from the drivers published by HP, or where can I find them?

Thanks on advanced and regards,
Antonio Biba

From what I know and working with a ML150 G6 before...

the B110i array will need Linux based drivers in order for ClearOS to see it. Vmware doesn't support this fakeraid as some people call it. Meaning it's just a software raid inside a chip. The CPU still does all the work. Since Vmware is very different than Vmware, I'm just assuming the same because they are both linux based.

I don't think B110i offers Linux based drivers... oh wait. Yes it should. If you pull the RedHat Drivers that should work, but you'll have to build them yourself. The only issue is depending on if you need the RedHat gui or not.

As TIM suggested you could just setup the drives as a AHCI (or whatever you think) and then use the software raid that ClaerOS offers.

Than you Tim for your reply.

I took a look to the link you posted, but I couldn't indentify the driver for this storage chip. I understand is a SATA Chip with a software implementation of RAID functions that HP has called HP Smart Array B110i. I think is new on this G7 Servers, because had no troubles with the last G6 I installed.

I'm not really interested on make the RAID functions to work. I just need some kind of driver or BIOS parameters so I can complete the ClearOS Installation. Then, sounds interesting to use the RAID Sfotware ClearOS offers. (After all, will relay on software)

Any idea how to make Setup Program to "see" the hard disk through this SATA Controller Chip?

Thank you Kevin, for your reply.

You're right... I have installed ClearOS 5.1 on a HP ML110 G6 and worked like a charmed. The problem I guess, is that new G7 models have this new storage controller chip HP Smart Array B110i that the installation process on the ClearOS can't "see".

In fact, HP provides drivers, but only for the distros they support. Red Hat and SUSE and all are on RPM format. So I can't use them in the installation process. Here is the link I've found:

h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSuppor...p;prodNameId=5075943

I think your idea on doing those drivers like .ko files to be used during installarion sounds great. Any suggestions how to do that? If I can do a functional .ko file or find some, I promaise to post it here.

Thanks again, and regards,

Hi Antonio,
I do recall reading a thread that talked about building your own ISO, but personally have had no experiences with that.

Jose, thank you!!! You saved my day. I was trying with SATA Legacy mode with no luck. Changed it to AHCI and it's finishing the installation.
