TOPIC: 5.1 > 5.2 upgrade by yum - kernel version
#14980
5.1 > 5.2 upgrade by yum - kernel version 1 Year, 6 Months ago
Hi all,

I performed an upgrade of our box last night via yum. The upgrade went without problem, and yum stated that it completed successfully.

There was no prompt for a restart.

I logged in this morning and the system displays 5.2, so looking good.

In the hardware report the system is listed as having kernel version 2.6.18-164.6.1.v5 (SMP).

In the yum log I noticed the kernel being upgraded (kernel.i686 0:2.6.18-194.8.1.v5).

Excuse my Linux inexperience - but do I need to perform a restart of the system for some of the changes to take effect?

Yes (for kernel upgrades)! Although when I did the upgrade it only installed the new kernel-devel and kernel-headers packages, not the actual kernel itself.

Are you sure it definitely upgraded the kernel too? (you can check in /etc/grub.conf)

Hi Tim,

looking in the grub.conf I have two kernel versions listed:

title Linux (2.6.18-194.8.1.v5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.8.1.v5 ro root=LABEL=/1 video=vesafb vga=0x3$
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.8.1.v5.img
title Linux (2.6.18-164.6.1.v5)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.6.1.v5 ro root=LABEL=/1 video=vesafb vga=0x3$
initrd /initrd-2.6.18-164.6.1.v5.img

The yum log for the upgrade to 5.2 shows:
Jul 28 15:50:24 Installed: kernel - 2.6.18-194.8.1.v5.i686...
(size was 19MB)
so I assume that is a new kernel version?

...if that is the case, then when I reboot the system (tonight) it will load the new kernel.

I was planning on doing this remotely. Is this something that can be done remotely, or is it possible that there will be a message requiring an answer on the console?

It should be possible to remotely reboot.

Of course it's not recommend in case anything goes wrong, but I updated a machine remotely after update to ClearOS 5.2 without any problems what so ever.

Hi,

I will be patient and do the re-boot early tomorrow morning from the console.

Looks like it was installed, you can do it remotely if you have nerves of steel and don't mind if in the worst case the box doesn't come back up headless installs also bring this kind of 'fun'!
Code:

shutdown -r now

Hi all,

Just to let you know that I restarted my system this morning and the new kernel (2.6.18-194.8.1.v5 (SMP)) loaded without any problems.

Thanks for your help.
