TOPIC: Upgrade from 4.3 to 5.1

Upgrade from 4.3 to 5.1 3 Years, 7 Months ago
So what kind of pitfalls am I in for in upgrading from CC4.3 to COS5.1? Should I go to 5.0 first? I'd prefer not to lose all my current settings if possible...

I would imagine you would have to do the upgrade from cd-rom just like 4.x to 5.x, I had upgraded to cc5.x before upgrading to cl5.1b2, but I can tell you from my experience from upgrading from 4.x to 5.x it depends on what you have configured on your cc box, some people had no problems at all and others had nightmares but everybody got though it, if not there always the forum.

as always...backup, backup and backup then you can do an upgrade via the cd. But if you are reliant on your box for money, production or what not wait until the final release as with the Beta there is no guarantee you will be able to upgrade to the final release. (the inclusion of the X server for the local webconfig is the main item that could be revised)

I imagine it is also feasible to do a live upgrade via yum in due course, but the same reason above there isn't much point just yet...

OK that brings up another question - (and yes I do plan to wait for the final release) - what exactly do I need to back up (I'm not very well versed in Linux) and will the backup of that version of CC be compatible with ClearOS 5.1?

web sites, databases, flexshares, file shares, home directories, mail, important configuration files, and a snap shot.

Sorry for the naive question, but when ClearOS 5.1 is out, can I do the migration by just issuing a "yum upgrade"?

You will be able to use yum to upgrade from ClarkConnect 5.0 to ClearOS 5.x. You will need to use a CD-ROM or USB-key upgrade for ClarkConnect 4.x.

My earlier question may need to be clarified: As a linux newbie, exactly what files/directories need to be backed up in order to back up web sites, databases, flexshares, file shares, home directories, mail, important configuration files, snap shots, etc ? Once I have them backed up, I will attempt to upgrade 4.3 to 5.1 with the CD. That should work, right?

Dude, this is a pretty complicated issue and depends on what services you have installed and running. Also it will depend on what additional software you may have installed on the server.

Maybe everyone can pitch in and list where the various files are located. You may wish to do some googling on backing up Linux too (and creating snapshots) and using LiveCDs to create images of drives.

Home directories/User files
These are found at /home/{user}

Flexshare
Files are found at /var/flexshare

Websites
Files are found at /var/www

Mail Archive
I think this is found at /var/archive

Mail
If you have been using pop mail, each user may have all their mail locally. If not, then it will be found on the server. Also imap mail will be on the server.
I think the mail is found in /var/mail

Important Configuration Files
This is where I reach my limit of knowledge. I believe they are all found in /etc/.

Someone should be able to confirm this. Please note that the config files may not transfer to the new system since the application software has been upgraded and often the config files also change and have additions. So be careful.

You can also back up the config files using the webconfig. Find it under System:Tools:Backup/Restore. I run this after each configuration change so I have a current copy.

I hope this gets you started.

Quick plug for the remote backup service which automatically schedules and does that and uploads it offsite, or also using rdiff-backup as a small intermediate way of keeping a mirror of your filesystem. I posted a bit over here.

Yes you should be able to upgrade to ClearOS 5.1 from 4.3 via CD.
