How do I get ClearOS to be the DNS for my local ne 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Hi All,

Im really a beginner when it comes to Linux, but have been using Clarkconnect for a few years now and it is great, and simple, mostly

My problem now, I have a setup:

ADSL(dhcp)->CleanOS 5.2 sp2 set up as a gateway -> router with other computers.

My local network is set up with static IP, but I can't get the DNS to work, the ClearOS server is set up as 192.168.1.1 in the LAN, and I want to use that as the DNS to, but I can only get it to work from the computers on the LAN if I use my ISPs DNS server. I have tried to look at the settings I had on my old server, and it seems to match, but it will still not work.

Update:

I have tried to ping www.google.com from the ClearOS server and that worked, so the DNS it gets from the ISP works, but still, it doies not from computers connected to it, using 192.168.1.1 as DNS.

You need to populate your COS server's host file. The easiest way is using the Web Interface: Network>Settings>Local DNS Server.

Do you have the Caching Nameserver Module installed? If not, install it.

BTW, if you can get your ADSL router into bridge mode you could switch your WAN to PPPoE which could be better. Also is your downstream router being used as a router or switch?

I just installed the "DHCP / Caching DNS" Did not think I needed it since it had the DHCP in the name. Now it works!

The ADSL is set to Bridge, have called my ISP to fix that since it was not possible to do by myself.
