PPPoE disconnection mystery 2 Years, 1 Month ago
My ISP utilizes VLAN to transport both Internet and IPTV to the customer. VLAN500 being the Internet and VLAN600 being the IPTV. In this case I am using Mikrotik's RB250GS to handle the VLAN tagging and pass on a stripped VLAN stream to ClearOS to do the PPPoE dialing. My ClearOS is installed as a VM under vmware esxi4.1u1 and it has been working great no complains on that.

However currently I have to put the VM down for maintenance and would like to have the PPPoE dialing role handled by another box, PPPoE dials perfectly fine but it disconnects every 8 minutes or so. I have tried it with multiple different network configuration and still ended up with the same results. So far only ClearOS 5.2 SP1 can sustain an uninterrupted connection for days.

My question is, are there any specific settings on ClearOS for the PPPoE dialer ? On my side, I only configured the PPPoE dialer through the web interface to place in the ISP username and password thats about it.

Attempted Configuration :
Huawei HG655A -> RB250GS -> ClearOS 5.2 SP1 Pass
Huawei HG655A -> RB250GS -> pfSense 2.0 RC1 Fail
Huawei HG655A -> RB250GS -> direct to laptop Fail

Upon further testing here are my conclusions ..

I did a fresh installation of ClearOS 5.2 SP1 and configured the PPPoE dialer. Everything was fine until it hit the 8 minute mark then the link got disconnected. I then proceeded to run the system update on the installation and the connection did not drop at all beyond the 8 minute mark.

Can't recall what system updates was there, but I'm pretty sure that one of it stopped the disconnections.

Upon further observations , I found out that the ISP requires a LCP/LQR echo interval of 30 seconds in order to keep the session alive.
