Computer unable to access internet or LAN boxes 1 Year, 5 Months ago
Hi everyone,

I recently changed the IPs that my ClearOS box hands out via DHCP from a 192. range to a 10. range. Everything seems to be working fine except for one XP box. I have a feeling this isn't really a ClearOS issue, but I'm hoping someone will still be able to help.

I have one XP Home box that just won't connect to the internet or other computers. When I log into the ClearOS box it is handing out an IP, and when I try to access the shares via other computers or start a VNC session via that IP everything works just fine. However, if I try to access the internet via that machine or try to access any network shares the computer refuses to connect. I cannot even try to get to the ClearOS login screen via the gateway:81. I went into the TCP/IP config for the adaptor and added the manual settings under the alternate configuration tab, but still no luck. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

i would start out by testing connectivity with pings.

Ping the following from the problem pc and let us know what works.

www.google.com

your Clear OS lan ip address ex: 10.0.0.1

another computer on your lan ex: 10.0.0.100
and
8.8.8.8

pinging google times out

Pinging the ClearOS box returns "Destination Specified is Invalid"

And pinging my laptop when on the network pings just fine. For some reason the XP box I'm having issues with just seems to be unable to communicate with the ClearOS Box. Thanks for the assistance so far.

Please post the following results on your XP Home box:

ipconfig /all
route print

Also, it is possible that your Windows network stack is messed up and you may need a tool to fix it.

Edit:

Just thought I'd clarify. The IP for this box listed in the DHCP table of the Clear Box is 10.10.0.225 and the gateway IP is 10.10.0.0, so these appear to be correct

I see a number of errors.

The gateway/dhcp/dns address is invalid. you cant have an address ending in 0

it should be something like 10.10.0.1

Also

Your Win XP box is set up to use the broadcast address. (10.10.0.255) for the subnet.

Change your dhcp range and the above addresses.

On a working machine compare the out put of

ipconfig /all

to your windows xp box.

I thought the same thing about the XP box's IP address, but then I had a closer look and it is .225 and not .255 (the broadcast address) so it should be fine.

Fix the gateway/dhcp/dns as Ryan says and it will probably work. You'll have to do an "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" on the XP box or reboot it after changing ClearOS. You may also have a spot of bother changing ClearOS as your XP box may lose contact with ClearOS and it could be easier to make the changed from the console.

So, just for clarification, I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly.

Change the Gateway IP on the ClearOS Box from 10.10.0.0 to 10.10.0.1. Reboot XP machine (or do ipconfig /release then /renew instead). This should hopefully resolve the problem.

My rather silly question then is this... I have another XP Pro box on the same switch connected to the same gateway card (10.10.0.0 ip) on the ClearOS Box but it works perfectly. Why would one machine accept that gateway ip and the other wouldn't?

Thanks again for all your help thus far everyone.
