TOPIC: DNSmasq times out quickly
#12178
DNSmasq times out quickly 2 Years, 11 Months ago
I have installed a fresh copy of ClearOS 5.1 and everything is working fine: DHCP, roaming profiles, share drives. Except for the DNS.

I have added various dns entries for example: intranet.domain.local, nas.domain.local to point to point to two different ip addresses.

The problem is that sometimes the dns works from the workstations and points to the corresponding ip address when I type the nas (i.e. intranet or nas) and sometimes it goes to a google search.

I think the DNS server is timing out quickly that sometimes it doesn't allow the local DNS to lookup in its cache, hence it hits the next external dns server.

How can I solve this problem? Prolong the DNS query time to the local DNS server. Clearly, the local dns must always function when a local server is being lookup/requested?

Thanks,

Hi Ibrahim, your DNS entries should really be static IP's, i've never come across using hostnames as the DNS server wouldn't know who to query unless the hostname lived in the local hosts file which defeats the point of having a hostname in the DNS field - have you tried configuring that way?

Thanks for the reply. You are right, static ips arthe best way to go.

Maybe I didn't explain the problem properly. I am using static ip addresses for the two servers (NAS and PDC). I am talking about the module in the ClearOS web interface (Network -->Local DNS).

That's where you can define your dns entries.

Maybe that clear the confusion.
