TOPIC: Free Content Filter on 6.2

Free Content Filter on 6.2 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi there,

On 5.2 we had a basic content filter for free, where we could select some categories and it would block them, like social networking.

On 6.2 i couldn't find it. When i access the Blacklists option under content filter, it says i need to purchase content filter updates, but i don't need the updates, only that old basic feature that was available on 5.2.

Is there anyway of doing this?

Hi, I believe blacklists have gone...as they were old and not maintained. Phraselists are still there:-

Gateway Menu > Content Filter > Edit Default Policy > Phraselists

Hi,

I've copied the site blacklists from 5.2 onto 6.2. Better something old than nothing

There are still some blacklists you can download and utilize. Granted they aren't the best in the industry but hell they are sufficient enough as an added layer of security.

www.shallalist.de/ <- free for personal use but also pay attention to the license. Not really a big deal but useful to be aware of.

urlblacklist.com/?sec=home <- This site has a fee to use their database but a 6$ requirement is not huge.

Lastly you can also try DNS content filtering solutions.

dyn.com/labs/dyn-internet-guide/ for example

For urlblacklist.com yes.

For www.shallalist.de/ I want to say yes. I've opened up the file and it contains documents that appear to be in the same format that DG is using. Within each blacklist directory you usually have a url and domain file where then offending items are listed. Shalla's list seems to follow that format though I have not yet personally attempted to import the files yet.

The DNS content filtering will work with any internet connection and is not dependent on your ClearOS system at all beyond the DNS pointer (if you use ClearOS as a DNS pointer).

Does this mean they are gone from subscriptions also?

No, I believe you need to purchase the content filter updates, as the provided blacklists are not available for free
