Hardware RAID 5 (SATA) 1 Year, 11 Months ago
I would like to put together a SOHO server with a hardware RAID 5. I have searched the forums but I have not found anybody doing this. Is there an adaptec card that anybody has used that works with 5.1?

My goal is to have both the OS and the data on the RAID 5.

Or maybe it would be better to get and HP ML110 server with the RAID card built in?

Any ideas?

I've got a ML110 in pieces at the front of me at the moment. I can create a RAID array, but it's not recognised as such by ClearOS (or FreeNAS for that matter). It just appears as the individual discs. The server has 6 SATA ports, but only the first 4 can be used for discs. The other two are hard coded as CD's despite the fact that it appears you can change this in the BIOS. It always reverts back to CD!
I have a 16GB compact flash card in a SATA converter I'm going to put the OS on, and I have created a software RAID 5 array with the remaining 3 1TB discs using the instructions I found here www.clearfoundation.com/docs/user_guide/...artitioning_and_raid for the flexshares. I just want this box as a file server only.
It's formatting the array as we speak (or type) so I don't know if it's going to work yet! I'll keep you posted.

There is a listed of the (limited) hardware raid cards supported here. But be wary of any cheap cards, as they are unlikely to be true 'hardware' raid and will not work

I've used software raid 1 and raid 5 in the past with success IMHO it is better to go this route

Hmmm not so good. When I reboot, all I see is "grub loading stage 2" and then it just hangs there.
After a bit of googling, it seems that grub is not installed correctly. Can I install grub from the rescue c< If so, how. Or, is there another way?
