Yeah that website is good. Had good info, but not what I needed...

I'll ask Tim if he can help me with adding the Repo, that would make the install go a bit easier.

I'm sure I can build my own rpm that would have it all together. I'm not that good thou!

The install was very easy thou. but after working with BackUPPC too, they are both easy installs, just all the options in BackUPPC can be "wow there LOTS here" at times.

Mondo and Mindi are pretty simply programs to install, and you have to install them both to it to work.

once you install all the RPM from the website, then install cdrecord, the DVD tools from the CentOS repo, and mkisofs you're good to go.

I thought it was my CD player (Xbox HD drive) was causing issue, but it was not having the DVD tools installed. Once that was installed everything went smoothly.

I just completed the backup now, I'll do some testing on the restore tonight and see if that works... I think Mondo combined with BackupPC would make a good file/image backup. Perfect with what I need. NOW if you mix the SDN cloud Backup to all that you have a PERFECT little system.

well it depends on your setup.

If I read Tim's post correctly, BackupPC doesn't offer a FULL backup or Bare metal restore.

So if you have a hardware failure, then what do you do?

I would use BackupPC to backup file level data, in case users delete a file by mistake etc.

Then I would use Mondo as a FULL backup restore in the case of a Hack, hardware failure, or whatever.

Then to provide the client with a extra level, if you add SDN remote backup tool, which would allow you a off-site backup in case of fire, death or plague! hahaha

P.S. My understand Mondo is a Image backup tool, doesn't provide file level backup. So you can't restore a specific file if you need too.

It would be nice if the tools were connected, as managing them both would be a pain. However, both work with cron (or as I like to call it in the forms... con job)... so you can automate in some ways.

Yes, you are correct. Mondo is a bare-metal solution. I asked the admin here if you can get file-level functionality. He says "yes, but it's difficult". He says "They didn't officially document that process as the restore process is not handled by mondo, but rather another utility bundled into mondo called mindi"... hmm... I'll need to read up a bit more.

I do see the big value in having both BackupPC and Mondo. Personally, I only need Mondo. Now you got me thinking about both

yeah, the backup is working, however burning it to DVD, or network shared is not.

So right now I'm trying both and they both are not working.

I'm trying to figure out how to get NFS to work properly. That is what Mondo uses. From what I understand, you need to make the network shared anonymous in order for it to "map" the drive so Mondo knows where to put it.

I'm not 100% sure why it's not burning to the DVD. Could be drive, but I'll check once I get back to the office.

I have setup an iSCSI drive, connected to my NAS. I did it in anticipation of an imaging/backup solution. So my server "thinks" there is a 100GB HD in the box, but it's really a LUN on my NAS... or something like that.

The base RPMForge repo has the mondo and mindi packages:

It probably has all the dependencies also.

I added and enabled the CentOS repos in the past when I added fail2ban to my ClearOS 5.x system. I also installed and enabled the yum-priorities plugin to keep packages from the additional repos from overwriting the ClearOS packages. I used information from the CentOS site and Tim Burgess's site: www.timburgess.net/node/25 to set it up.

Fully tested... at least what I wanted. Fast backup and nice image software.

The CD burnning still needs some tweaks to work, but the network NFS should work perfect for that.

I was able to do a full backup, delete the drive, and reinstall using Mondo in about 2 hours. Very nice system if you ask me.

mondo is a very good reliable tool. it can do differential backups and also allows restores of individual files.
we use it for bare metal and do an intial image which is burnt to disk. we then do another to an nfs mount and do differentials to there via a cron job.
there is very good documentation on their site and it's a little tricky to get the cron job to go intially with a workaround.
we then use another cron job to delete the differentials older than 14 days.
