Bacula | Removing from previous install (4.x) 2 Years, 4 Months ago
|

I thought I had eliminated Bacula from a carry over of 4.3 after upgrading to 5.1 Ent. But there seems to be some residual elements left behind such as the menu item in the GUI and some cron scripts, services at startup, etc....
I've always been successful in installing/removing Bacula in previous CC installations, but since 5.1 does not use apt and now uses yum I think something has broken in the removal process.
Does anyone have any insight they can share?

No, that didn't do the trick. I'm not even sure if it's possible to reinstall the prev Bacula (from 4.3) and then try to remove it again.
| Code: |
# rpm -e app-bacula
error: package app-bacula is not installed

After looking through the yum list I tried yum remove xxxxxxxxx and that seemed to take some additional pieces away but not all files.
I reinstalled bacula and bacula-mysql then removed it again, a quick reboot and browser cache clear and I believe it's now gone. Thanks.

what is the replacement for Bacula? I loved the 4.2 Bacula client to use to backup to a removable usb2.0 disk.

David,
Do your own or pay Clear for the privilege.
Let me know and I can help you set up your own. There are several open source software packages that are better than the cumbersome bacula that work great.
You can also easily create some scripts to backup and create a rolling local backup. Fogot where I found them.
rsync also works very well. See the other post about the usb backup. I have some further info about USB droves that would apply to you!
Let me know if I can help,
Paris

Hey Paris,
I appreciate your comments and you mentioned that there were several open source software packages that are better than bacula.. I was wondering if you might be so kind as to point me to a few. I am looking for a replacement as well. I want to know all of your suggestions and would especially be interested in any that had a client app that we could install in individuals pc's that would run in the background and do automatic backups at night... anyway.. any and all suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Sincerely,
George

Hi George,
I personally use backupmanager for local backups. Its free, manages multiple formats and options. Configuration is pretty easy once you get the hang of it and very much cleaner than the bacula.
We also are a provider for SafebackupPro which while using an open source backup software provides secure off site and redundant storage.
I have thrown in some basic scripts that work as well but don't use those anymore.
Let me know if Zytell can provide you or anyone else with the off site backup services. The clear paid service is nice and reasonably priced. Our solutions have more options.
Thanks Paris
