ClearFoundation

Forums
ClearOS ClearFoundation and ClearCenter have moved to the new website ClearOS.com (https://clearos.com). We are making this change in order to improve search and exposure of ClearOS to the world. There are several improvements that are being made and some that are still on the table for development. The forums are now live on clearos.com and locked on this site until all the redirects are in place. If you have issues using the new site, feel free to ask on the #clearfoundation room in IRC chat on freenode.net or engage with a chat agent on the site if they are around. Our goal is to complete this step so that we can be properly ready for the types of communication that will be essential for the release of ClearOS 7!

TOPIC: Using ClearOS as a VPN gateway
#7239
Using ClearOS as a VPN gateway 5 Years, 1 Month ago
I would like to set-up a service like StrongVPN. Install ClearOS on a server and use it as a VPN gateway for multiple users. I'm not that server savvy to set-up OpenVPN on my own so I find ClearOS and its user management an interesting solution.

Is this a possibility? What limitations or issues do I have to take into account? Any other recommendations to approach this?

Thanks

OpenVPN is very easy to get up and running when you follow the User Guide accompanying it in the Webconfiguration gui of ClearOS. After implementing the OpenVPN server, you simply install the client application at your remote location(s) and copy the certificates and configuration files supplied through the webconfig to your remote work stations. Not too much more than that; works pretty slick. No real limitations except needing the client app at remote locations. The PPTP server works pretty good too, but OpenVPN is supposedly more secure and works smoothly.

So, is it really necessary to use ClearOS' client app to make the connections? Could we use Windows/MacOSX in-built support for OpenVPN/PPTP instead? It would be just to route the internet traffic through ClearOS' VPN.

It can be done but you need to manually configure OpenVPN. A few people have done it on the forums. Is there any reason you are not going to try an unmanaged IPSec VPN instead?
