If your printer uses PostScript (many, but not all, mono and laser printers), it's not hard and has been discussed in the past. See
this (special attention to the references at the end of the thread) and
this thread (this one's a fair bit more detailed).
If your printer uses a Foomatic-based driver (many, but not all, inkjet printers),
you can't use the CUPS driver, but it's still
possible with the native driver.
