Yes - this is most appealing - I’ve testet Amahi and FreeNAS, and none of them do the home segment well.What to implement? (What is expected from a home server gateway)All modules should be possible to deactivate/activate / - Router (With bandwidth control pr "user" / - Firewall / - Basic NAS - with support for Win/OSX (lion) (CIFS/SMB/NFS/etc) / - FTP server / - WebServer / - Media servers (Several - UPnP/DLNA - Logitech Media Server (Squezebox)/iTunes/DAAP / - Bit Torrent (Transmission?) / - RSYNC - Dynamic configuration of shares and backup (JBOD like) / Netinstall is also a nice feature (Small bootable USB/CD with installer - and all packages etc on the net)Possibility of upgrading, without complete reinstall.Release Q1 2012? ;-)

I’m not sure that a dedicated ’home version’ is needed. I think the idea is to make the install process easier for a broader range of end users. To that end, you could have one of the very first install screens be a ’select your primary use’ screen. If a home server is needed, then all the usual home options would be pre-selected and then installed. If you wanted a small gateway server, then more/different options would be selected. And of course, the option to choose ’advanced’ and pick everything one by one would be essential.
