ClearOS Enterprise 6.1.0 Beta 1 Released

Posted by: Peter Baldwin

Tagged in: clearos

The ClearOS Enterprise 6.1.0 beta 1 release is here!  This release will kickstart the process of creating a stable base system: installer, RPM packages, users, groups, system tools, LDAP, network, firewall, framework, and Marketplace.  At the same time, we will start rolling out more apps like Web Proxy and Web Access Control found in this beta 1 release.

You can find download information for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions in the Release Notes.  Enjoy!

Small mistake

There is a small typo which made its way in the release note page: The release date should read September 22, 2011 and not September 22, 2012 (At least, I think so).

I don´t understand, the Core Os is stuck at 6.0 alpha since monts while others are packing another 6.1 release beside? Is this a joke?

Nice attitude there mate. I'm going to grab myself a bagel this morning to go with your giant cup of self-entitlement.

1) Wrong thread. Try http://www.clearfoundation.com...eased.html

2) ClearOS Core 6.0 alpha does not exist. I believe you are referring to ClearOS Core 6.1 Alpha 1.

3) You can separate ClearOS Core into two distinct phases. The first phase is building out the infrastructure and internal processes. The bulk of the work only has to be done once, but it takes a loooong time. The second phase - building and maintaining releases - can only start after the first phase. The technical aspects of the first phase are mostly done, but very little has been done with the important non-technical tasks (web site, wiki, forums, marketing etc).

@a5247424 I'm sorry that you are upset but let me explain some things here. Peter is right, Core is not stuck at 6.0 but is at 6.1. We have a current repository with all of their updates built regularly and automatically as our upstream provider releases errata on 6.1. This happens automatically on our backend servers at great cost to the foundation so feel free to contribute. We have a number of people who are working on contributing on the 6.1 code and we need more volunteers to push 6.1 forward. There are less than a dozen packages that need to be worked on but we need more help, especially with mirrors.

If you have a mirror that you would like us to push the code to, let me know and we'll get it set up. 6.1 core exists only as packages at this point but we will roll it all together when it is done. The total mirror size needs about 90 GB for the whole of ClearOS Core.

Once we get the dozen packages done we can push them as well and cut 6.1 Core as an ISO.

Thanks for releasing this beta!

Just experiment a bit with BTRFS. I found the btrfs-progs in the extra repository and installed it. It's a very experimental version.

ClearOS 6.1 Enterprise it's installing and running fine, nice boot screen, i'm positive! Now we have to wait for more modules to be released.

It will be interesting to see how BTRFS performs in Fedora. It was going to be the default in Fedora 16 (the next release) but it looks like it was pushed out to at least 17 :-(

Is there a way to create something like an RSS feed to the main blog?
written by Grant B , September 30, 2011
Hi ClearFoundation

Since I love you guys so much I'd like to create something like an RSS feed to any blog posting (not just a particular topic). I've looked around but can't seem to find such an option.

yes i noticed that its delayed...

I think we have to wait a few years before we can expect a stable version of BTRFS. With which kernel will be RHEL 7 shipped? What are your thoughts Peter?

Is there an online update for this or does this require a completely fresh install

@ Grant - It looks like the built-in RSS feeds are somewhat limited, but here's a URL - http://www.clearfoundation.com...-feed.html

@ Marcel - RHEL 7 is as good a guess, though it might not be the default!

@ jeff1965 - You will need to do a fresh install to use the beta. Starting from beta 1, we generally try to maintain upgrades to future test releases, but we don't make any promises.

The old mantra for now is "when it's ready". For major releases like this one (every 3-ish years), it's very difficult to pin down ship dates. The interim releases (about twice a year) have more of a cadence to them, so ship dates are easier to define. We know it's important to give clients a roadmap for ship dates, but sometimes there are too many "known unknows" and "unknown unknowns" with the major releases to provide good guidance.

Oh Thanks Peter. I was just curious about when it would be out of Beta stage into a final release.
